The great race for geolocation: China launches Beidou

Last week, China launched a BeiDou-type satellite. One more satellite: how important, do you think? Yet this “extra” satellite has a very special meaning. It is added to the 34 BeiDou satellites already in space and thus closes this geolocation system. It is the culmination of a long race for geolocation started in 1974 by the United States with GPS and continued by the Russians with the GLONASS system and Europe with Galileo.
